Exceptional
From the Gian Enrico Cortese's review
... For the Italian renaissance singers faith and art were not
separable: the wonderful Convitto Armonico's performance, well
directed by Buschini, produces an emotional and rich interpretation
which goes beyond the simple music score. We have the impression to
receive a theological lesson under the form of a music performance
conducted by the hand of a master as demonstrated by the perfect
matching of musical phrases and vocal quality. ...
"Early Music", numero 96, Dicembre 2003
From the Selene Mills' review
... This performance is nicely understated: there are no big egos
on display and it seems that it is the music which speaks through
the singers, rather than the singers who perform the music. The
sound is pleasing both from the male quartet and schola gregoriana
who perform respectively the psalms and lectiones, and from
the mixed choir of eighteen. ...

From the Nicoletta Sguben's review
Music for Maundy Thursday Liturgy...
This is the contents of this recording: it has the power to light
upon the ability of MARC'ANTONIO INGEGNERI as a composer.
INGEGNERI, a composer born in Verona, worked for long time in the
town of Cremona in the second half of sixteenth century. The
Lamentationes Hieremiae and the Responsori Hebdomandae contained in
the CD have the same wonderful quality of the ones produced by
Palestrina, Tallis, Morales and Victoria, to only cite some of the
composers that wrote for the same liturgical occasion. The music
produced by Ingegneri (printed in 1588), was intended to merge
words and music: sound has to exalt the declamation of the words
following the manierist and colorful venetian schools. The drama
and the images of the texts of the two masterpieces ---connected to
Christ's Passion, and to the "tenebrae" rite (death and
resurrection)--- is latent in the interpretation of the vocal
ensemble Il Convitto Armonico: they allude more than emphasize. The
interpretation is understated and the words meaning is well
underlined in a balanced and never striding way. The interpretation
is polished and the listener has the impression the ensemble is
recovering the ancient enchanting function of chant. This function,
which has archaic roots, is connected with the essence of the
renaissance culture.
